A U.S. woman who survived a car accident in Monroe County, Georgia, tragically died after falling into a concealed "deep well" while trying to find assistance, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Survived Initial Crash on Saturday Morning


Shirley Obert, an employee of Chick-fil-A, was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Saturday morning, March 29th, just outside of Atlanta. The incident involving her Mazda Miata occurred around 7 a.m. near Oxford Road and Abercrombie Road. Ms. Obert was the only occupant of the vehicle.


Husband Unable to Locate Her After Phone Call


Following the crash, Ms. Obert reportedly contacted her husband and informed him of her location after her car veered into nearby woods. However, when her husband went to the area she described, he was unable to find her. Authorities stated that the reason Ms. Obert's car left the road remains unknown.

Extensive Search Effort Leads to Discovery


A large-scale search operation was launched on Saturday afternoon and continued through Saturday night and into Sunday. Multiple agencies, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Patrol Aviation, Monroe County Fire Department, Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, and Forsyth Police Department, participated in the effort to locate Ms. Obert.

Body Found in Brush-Covered Well


Tragically, Ms. Obert's body was discovered at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Sheriff's Office reported that she was found "at the bottom of a deep well that was surrounded by very thick brush, near where her car was found."

"Tragic Accident" While Seeking Help


Authorities believe that Ms. Obert was attempting to get help after the car accident when she fell into the hidden well. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office stated, "Mrs Obert appeared to have been trying to go for help when this incident occurred. This appears to be a tragic accident." Anna Watkins, the public information officer for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, echoed this sentiment, describing the incident to The Macon Telegraph as a "tragic accident."




The accident occurred near Oxford Road and Abercrombie Road in Monroe County, Georgia.
