Multi-Vehicle Accident Shuts Down I-45 in Both Directions
Just before noon today, a serious accident involving multiple 18-wheelers occurred on I-45, just south of Madisonville at FM 2989. The crash led to a complete closure of the highway in both directions and significant traffic disruptions.
Initial Incident: 18-Wheeler Carrying Steel Beams Overturns
An 18-wheeler transporting steel I-beams was traveling southbound when the driver veered to the right, striking an exit sign. The truck then crossed all southbound lanes, collided with the median cables, and overturned. As the vehicle rolled, the steel beams were scattered across the highway. Fortunately, none penetrated the truck’s cab. The driver sustained head and arm injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Chain Reaction: Additional Collisions Involving 18-Wheelers and a Pickup
As traffic slowed due to the initial crash, another 18-wheeler attempted to avoid the congestion but struck the center cables, breaking through into the northbound lanes and colliding with a pickup truck. Shortly after, a third 18-wheeler, loaded with rebar, also lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic. The pickup truck driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.
Traffic Advisory and Road Closures
Authorities have completely shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of I-45. Drivers are advised to take the following detours:
Northbound Traffic: Exit at FM 1696, travel west to Highway 75, then continue north to Spur 104. Avoid Spur 67 due to heavy congestion.
Southbound Traffic: Exit at 21 Buckeys, head west to Highway 75, then proceed to FM 1696 before re-entering I-45.
Officials estimate that the highway will remain closed for the next 4 to 5 hours as crews work to clear the wreckage and ensure road safety. Travelers are urged to plan alternate routes and expect delays.
