Driver with Suspended License Under Investigation
Authorities reported that a 32-year-old woman, who was driving with a suspended license, was behind the wheel of an Audi involved in the accident. Investigators are determining whether she ran a red light or if speeding played a role in the crash. A preliminary breath test was also conducted to check for possible intoxication.
Police Commissioner Calls Incident a ‘Horrific Tragedy’
“This was a horrific tragedy caused by someone who shouldn’t have been on the road,” said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “A mother and two young children lost their lives, and another child is fighting to survive. This has devastated a family and the entire neighborhood.”
Chain Reaction Crash Leads to Pedestrian Deaths
The accident occurred around 1 p.m. when the Audi rear-ended a Toyota. The impact caused minor injuries to both drivers, as well as to another adult and three children inside the Toyota. The Audi driver had to be extracted from her vehicle after the crash.
Authorities stated that the force of the collision sent the Audi careening into the pedestrians in the crosswalk before overturning. The victims—a 35-year-old mother and her 6- and 8-year-old daughters—were pronounced dead at the scene. The woman’s 4-year-old son was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Mayor Expresses Deep Concern
Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a press conference, described the incident as a “terrible, terrible accident” and emphasized how “extremely concerning and painful” the tragedy is for the community.
